To date, I haven't seen one that took my title. I have seen them take my interpretation of the character, the storyline (Cthulhu can't sleep, so he answers questions), the ranting, Xenu, and even the surprise ducking at a key phrase (in C4C, it's "rapid fire round").

Okay, that sounds really fucking annoying. You are going about it the right way, no argument.

Can I make a small suggestion?

Oh, yes. There's much to be done with Cliffy. Consider his father. The situation may be stable, but could be . . . exploited. Consider the other noblemen who might question what happened on the night of the royal ball. Consider people who might want to besmirch or even take down the "powerful person" you mentioned. Cynthia's parents, Cliffy's reluctance to being "master" of anyone . . . there are many avenues that could be explored.

As a matter of fact, some people said that they wished they had seen more of Cliffy's story that came between his schooling and his employment.

Sadly, these are things which must be explored in time, and I have many projects.

Sequel revolving around Dizzy!?!? That's awesome. I still think though, in the sense that Tom Sawyer became a supporting character of sorts to Huck Finn, you should keep Cliffy in the background, namely because there are plot points I think are yet to be fully explored. I'd like to think the "secret" he shares with the powerful person in the end (no spoilers, hah) is something that could end up causing him problems down the road if it ever gets out. And bear in mind that Cynthia did mention to him how much she disliked the way he was doing things earlier on. I wonder if those concerns and desires to "earn things with ones' own hard work" still exist. Thanks!

Thanks very much! Of course, I'd love to see this made into a film, but I don't have the contacts to pitch it myself. Maybe when I hit it big and have a million readers. :)

I am planning on writing a sequel, although I don't know if I would follow Cliffy. To be honest, I'm more interested in Dizzy's life. I'm working on a short story which involves the mafia's stake in bear polo, and how Dizzy gets roped into helping them uncover a bear doping scandal.

Honestly, you should pitch this as a film, or if you want to keep it in chapter form, maybe get it loaned out to a Japanese animation company - I feel like if it were done right this could be a brilliant anime. I just finished listening to the story and if possible, I would love to know more about what happens to Cliffy - in other words would love to see a sequel if you have it in you!

Interesting info, Brand. I'm a bit of a data nerd, especially when it comes to correlation and causation. What might be interesting to see, if you're interested in sharing, is the correlation between your sales rank and the number of copies sold.

Google makes a free kick-ass little tool that help uncover hidden correlation. No idea if it'll work in this case or not, but give it a shot: http://www.google.com/trends/correlate/

And yeah, keep writing and releasing. That's a common theme everywhere!

Thanks very much! My only other published novel is "Tumbler" which you can also find at Podiobooks.com

And yes, the music is really good. I was lucky enough to work with the Brothers Burn, who made that piece especially for the Hidden Institute.

The Hidden Institute is one of the best pod cast books I have ever had the pleasure to hear! what are your other novels called? I have listened to tons of pod cast books from independent authors, (I have a1.5 hour commute) and I must say this is the first time I've been compelled to contact the author for any reason. I look forward to reading or listening to more of your work, well done! Oh, and great choice of music for the production as well, it was very fitting.

Thank you, Brand. It's easy to forget there's a difference between anonymity and criminality. People need freedom to make (honest) mistakes, wade into places with opinions not yet fully formed, and surf free from harassment or reprisal.

This is the equivalent of stopping someone on the street and demanding their papers. I don't think it grandiose to cite Martin Niemoller: "I didn't speak out because I wasn't X... Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me."

The tumbler has a nice cover and nice editorial review in Amazon. I was thinking it might be a science fiction. It is because asteroids and space were indicated. I am also glad that it is available in paperback and kindle formats.

Without trying to sound too mercenary, it does make me wonder if I should do a sequel. Seriously, I've had more requests to continue this world as a series than anything I've done. Maybe I'll do that after the next book. (shrug)

I am the source of the review which spawned this post and I have to say that I am thrilled that my questions have answers. I'd be even more stoked if you wrote the book that includes those details. Maybe it's just my taste (more political and less bildungsroman), but that book could be utterly brilliant, and I would love to read it.

I agree (obviously). One of the strategies I've seen recently (and really love) involves dropping the price of your book to around $1, then letting interest and sales rank drop, then raising it again to make the most of both sales rank and profitable pricing.

Neither the writer nor the publisher dictates what a story is worth - the market does. Obviously someone started it, but the market has accepted it. Personally, if I self-publish (and it's looking more and more likely for reasons I won't go into here) I will price my book low in order to minimise the risk for a reader trying a new author. I will then release other books and play around with pricing and those royalties add up, even when they are coming from small amounts. Adaptability is the key to survival.

Well, without trying to dig myself in any deeper, I would point out that you are not the only one who has derided the $0.99 book, and that there are some who do make the statement that this marketing strategy undercuts all book sales. So, it's not just you. :)

There's that word again . . . worth . . . a beautiful and ephemeral concept that does not bring me any closer to my solid gold yacht. :)

Trust me, when I've sold my cheap books to enough people that my name is a household word, I'll charge what they're "worth". But the way I'll know how to do that is by experimenting to see what revenue is like at different levels. I doubled my income by dropping my price to $0.99 . . . that's hard to ignore.

If (when? Yeah, probably when, I'm sure I've said it) I say you're undervaluing your work, I'm not saying it out of fear that you'll undercut my eventual sales. I'm not inflating a giant rat to set up outside your website or anything. I'm saying it because I believe with both my Artist and Publisher hats on that your work is worth more than you're charging. If you find it's a better strategy to sell your work for less than it's worth, that's certainly your right. But it's also a sad commentary on the consumer's ability to prioritize ("$7 for the #2 at Taco Bell? Sure. $2 for a short story? Hell naw!").

Of what you've written, I totally agree. If the artiste (and I wish I'd thought to add the silent 'e' at the end when I wrote this) were content with pricing his own work as he wished, there would be no overlap for argument.

The main element of concern is when the artiste derides the publisher for "undervaluing" their work, and states that the publisher is then diminishing expectations in the market, which hurt his sales. That is a form of control, where one person decides that the other needs to follow his marketing strategy, or face public condemnation and be labeled a villain for hurting the efforts of the valiant artiste.

Denigrate my strategy if you will, but don't take the victim standpoint, saying that the cheap writer is ruining the market. That's a passive/aggressive form of control, and the Libertarian in me gets all squinty and mean when that happens.

Brand,

I think you're crafting this as a dispute between Artist and Publisher when it's just as easily described as a dispute over marketing strategies. A writer who isn't willing to reduce the price of his work to see an immediate upswing in sales *may* be a chin-stroking, brandy-snifting, mantel-leaning artiste; he may not be, though. He may be just as much of a Publisher as the one who drops prices until the work sells the most units. He may just have a different publishing strategy.

I get that you feel your strategy is denigrated. Hell, I've denigrated it, and almost right to your face. But swinging back by characterizing writers who use another strategy as precious elitists is probably not going to win the day. I pack a lunch every day when I go to work. I'm as pixel-stained a technopeasant as you'll find. My choice not to use your strategy may be costing me money. It *certainly* is in the short term. I choose instead to shop stories around and hope to sell them the old school way. If/when I decide to self-publish, I will price my work based on the value I assign it. I'm not scared your high-quality, less expensive stories will expose my work as bloated and overpriced. Honest.

We disagree on strategy, but we're disagreeing with our Publisher hats on.

Sorry if this post seems like a shameless plug, but if you are viewing this page, you might be interested in the following:

If you want some more info on "Hell Hath No Fury", check out the 2nd half of my interview with http://gowmainframe.blogspot.com/2011/03/gowm-20-interview-with-brand-gamblin.html

That being said, I'd advise starting with the first part at http://gowmainframe.blogspot.com/2011/03/gowm-19-interview-with-brand-gamblin.html

(Or you can just go to my website http://geekoutwithmainframe.com/ & either go to the "Podcast Directory" or scroll down for Brand's name somewhere on the right side of the page).

I also have extensive links to Brand's stuff on the show notes. So if you are a Brand Gamblin fan, like me, come by. Where else has he had 2 hours on a podcast just to discuss his stuff? :)

Thanks Brand! Yeah, when I save from word I delete all the extra crap they put in there with Find & Replace. I'm probably old school in that I prefer single returned indented paragraphs like in a paperback book for paragraph format, but hey it's all preference. Great post and thanks again for sharing!

The double <br/> thing may just be because I'm old school HTML. Some people prefer paragraph tags, but I just never needed it, unless I was formatting the paragraph.

And regarding the "Save from Word" option: I would recommend that you build a small HTML page by hand, then import it into Word, then tell Word to save it. Chances are, your webpage will be about ten times larger than it would by hand, with hundreds of unnecessary formatting tags strewn about. It's not really their fault, they gain stability through compartmentalizing their code. But at the same time, it's incredibly inefficient. Just my $0.02

Brand,

Thank you so much for this post! I appreciate that you got down into some of the details. I've used some HTML trickery with find and replace in notepad to make some of my word docs single spaced for Smashwords submissions, but I never knew about "\r\n" that is very helpful - thanks!

I’m probably naïve with this question, but could you humor me?  Is there a reason that a double is better than putting each paragraph between and or is it just an easier/better way with Find & Replace tools to make universal formatting changes to your manuscript? If you save from Word as “Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *.html)” then it automatically puts your paragraphs between tags and you can open the doc in Notepad and use Find and Replace to delete the rest of the extraneous stuff Word adds from there. I was just curious if it’s better to have your paragraphs between tags so you can do more with them like indent your paragraphs using CSS or something.

When I heard the news that The Hidden Institute was out I couldn't find it available as a Kindle eBook on Amazon.com - and I was pretty sure that was the biggest sales generator, so I wondered what was going on :) Glad to see it's up and I hope it's doing well for you. I'd love to see a post about why you chose the price point it's listed at, but that might be too long of a post for you to spend time on, and we'd all rather have you spending your time writing the next book if that's the case, so I’ll understand if that’s an undertaking you don’t want to get into. Thanks again for taking the time to share all this great stuff! You Rock!

When I first did Tumbler, I created an RSS feed before submitting to Podiobooks. Because of that, I ended up with two feeds, which confused listeners to no end. I'm trying to avoid that this time by letting Podiobooks take care of it, after I submit to them. I've been waiting until I had five episodes done before submitting, so they should be available on PB fairly soon. Sorry for the confusion.

Sooooooo is there an RSS out there for this that I can subscribe to? I've looked on iTunes and podiobooks, tried to do a direct add and nothing.

I'm lazy, I don't remember to download and then add to my podcast list and sync to my mp3 player :)

Thank you so much for posting this! I thought the way you had a fluid version of your book for beta readers online was genius, I'm going to do the same thing in a few months when I feel my novel is ready for beta readers. It is really cool to see how you went about doing the rest to get your book online and in print. After posting this comment I'm going to read through this again to let it all sink in. Thanks for sharing, this is wonderful information!

Laying out the steps involved is so helpful. As someone considering entering the self-published ebook market I thank you for that.
I hope the book is a huge success. Perhaps I'll get to interview you on Podioracket.com when the podcast version comes out.

And I now have an entire list of things to keep me intimidated whenever I think about working on my cheesy detective story.

That's a good point, and while I'm leery of posting specifics, I can say that, in this case, the sales numbers fit the rank. Gimmie a minute, and I'll post a graph of it.

Great data! Thanks for posting it. I will note one thing - most authors are saying that it is much harder to rise in the rankings than it was even six months ago. I know one book I released last year hit about 7000 when I sold two copies in the first hour. A couple weeks ago, I released another book and sold 3 copies in the first hour and it only hit 10,000.

So I would go by sales numbers, not rankings if you're charting anything over a couple months.

It's all good food for thought. I think at this point I'm willing to try both and see what happens.

As for losing control of a book forever, I think that's what they call a really BAD contract. I wouldn't sign that. From what I understand, most contracts have sunset clauses (or whatever it's called) whereby the "out of print" terms are defined and the rights return to the author. From reading Dean Wesley Smith's blog and Laura Resnick's comments, I'm beginning to think that learning about contracts and utilizing the services of a good Intellectual Properties Attorney is the preferable way to go for me. But I'm still new and I have ZERO career thus far, so what do I know?

Excellent post. The topic of eBooks is a very exciting one right now. Everywhere I look, I keep hearing that people's eBooks sales have been exploding. It does seem like many of these people have had books published traditionally, but not all of them. I'm sure it helps tremendously to have that audience though, when trying to self publish. I've been so excited about just getting a novel on podiobooks, but now I'm also going to be really focused on eBooks when my first novel is ready to roll out. Thanks for all the info you share with us on how Tumbler has been doing, and I hope The Hidden Institute does even better for you. Keep building that back log! Long tale baby! :)

Congrats! That's really cool you've now finished your third novel. I can't wait to read it. I'm impressed with your timeline for editing. I've also written three novels, but have yet to edit one of them :) That's my goal for 2011, to get them all edited and on podiobooks. I hope that this book brings you great success, improves your Tumbler sales, (which I will now buy with my birthday money) and gives you lots of great inspiration with the success to get the next one out there. Way to go man.

Tim, that's a complicated question. When I published Tumbler, I accepted that it was a test to see how I could do publishing on my own. From what I've found out, I make more money self-publishing than some published authors I know. At the same time, things like having professional editors and print distribution are tempting. Also, it gets rid of the stigma associated with self-publishing.

For the moment, I need money, and can't afford to wait 18-24 months to find an agent and publisher, then to publish the book. At the same, a successful self-published novel can only help to build an audience, which would improve my chances on future works with an agent/publisher.

So, I suppose the answer is . . . yes?

Congrats Brand! I'm extremely jealous of your two week editing goal, but am glad for your sake. So is your goal to sell well enough not to need a major publishing house or that sales will lead to a publishing deal?

Peter: Yeah, I saw that a few months ago. Luckilly, his version is almost completely different from mine. So, I'd have to change the title, but little else. So, that's good news, at least.

And hey! That might make publishers more interested in Steampunk 1984 stories! :)

I've always described you on that day as being shell-shocked, but in a good way. I see now that may not have been so far from the truth. You seemed so completely surprised that other creative people not only knew you, and respected your work, but that we were interested in getting to know you better. I was surprised that you lived in the area. I wanted to talk to you more then, but frankly the lines were too long ;)

I will never forget the look on your face the first time, in a panel or reading (I can't remember which), that everyone shouted out "Squee!" in unison. I thought you were going to bolt for the door. You might have, but I think we had you hemmed in ;)

I'm glad you stuck it out. Our little creative community is far better for having you in it.

Wow. I have a creepily similar tale myself, just a couple years earlier by your time line. Kudos in airing it out and embracing the opportunity. After all, isn't camaraderie the reason why all of us go to these conventions?

Wow. That sounds like quite a shock. Having the person who was the most important person in your life tell you that you're essentially worthless is pretty tough to take. To have that happen and then stumble into a group of strangers who recognize your name and think that you're great because of what you do... that's a big shock. But a good one in many ways. I imagine it helped you quite a bit in recovering from your wife leaving.

Sounds like someone was looking out for you.

I expected to spend my first con ever, Balticon in 2009, sitting in corners and the backs of rooms quietly watching others talk and laugh, because I couldn't couldn't get anyone to go with me after months of trying and that's what usually happens to me when I'm alone. Instead I had people tweeting me to meet up because they knew me from the Internet, and hugs, and fascinating late night conversations, and rides home so I could stay for those conversations long after the Light Rail stopped running for the night. It's a pretty incredible thing.

I had a similar experience with Heather at Balticon this year. She's a fabulous person for making one feel welcome and at home in a strange land :)

Thanks for the post, Brand. A most enjoyable read!

I'd considered that, but it seems to me that I would have to be deriding or taking a humorous slant on the original text, which seems like it's too open to interpretation. I mean, I could say that by pointing out how 1984 had a steampunk theme, but without a setting, I could argue that I was making commentary on 1984. But it would be up to a judge to decide whether I was making a valid case or not.

Thanks for your help!

Parody is protected, however. Perhaps there is a way you could tweak the book so it reads more like that?

Thank you for the suggestion. I've tracked them down, and I'll give it a shot. Near as I can tell, the licensing fee would run a minimum of 110USD, but that's not terrible at all. This may not solve the problem of getting a publisher, but it would certainly remove one obstacle to publishing.

Another option is to work a deal with the current holder of rights for 1984 and just pay a licensing fee,

Well, the last time it was bumped out was 1998, as far as I know. That time, it was extended from 50 to 70 years. So, while there may be another extension in the next decade (although I don't think Disney has that kind of clout anymore) I think I'm probably good.

Worst case, I'll just have to work on the newer stories instead. Thanks!

Tony Mast mentioned it on Twitter already, but have you considered approaching Orwell's estate, or whoever currently owns the rights? That seems like a fourth option. If they like the story, and are willing to make a deal, you might have an easier time finding a publisher than even if 1984 was simply in public domain.

Plus, waiting might not be an option. Don't the copyright time limits tend to get bumped out further every few years or so?

Sorry. :( Hey, just think how "Retro" it'll be when I pull this out of the drawer in a decade and we all go, "Wow, that's nowhere near as good as your new stuff. Ugh."

Either that, or it'll be one of the "lost stories" . . . like the way they keep finding new Beatles recordings. :P

That's an excellent point. I'd seen it as a market kind of street, so that made me think of fish oil. But you're right. There's no reason why, in that area, it would be more fish-based than anything else. Thanks!

I liked the ironic opening paragraph. The only phrase I question is "cobbles of the alleyway were slick with fish oil". It makes my wonder why there is specifically Fish oil on the ground, seventy miles inland. I think it would make more sense for the cobbles in the ally to be coated with an unidentifiable oil.

Great advice. I realized a while back, I not only don't need to write EVERY part of the story, but I shouldn't. I've been trying to learn how to skip the boring bits and only write the exciting stuff. I think it's a skill I'm getting better at, but I still have a lot to learn. How will I get better? Keep writing. See you at the finish line on the 30th! Thanks for the cool post.

He he. I think your husband would agree that there's a healthy level of fear regarding diesel fumes. . . but I think there's an extreme version which could seem irrational. :)

Great advice. I think it's going to help me get past my own lull.

BTW, my husband would insist that there's nothing irrational about a fear of diesel fumes.

Well said, Brand! I totally agree, there's enough pretentious judgment in the world. They should stop being a buzz-kill for new writers and instead dig in to find the Stephen Kings and Nathan Lowells in the group!

Thank you for that. The "smile kindly and change the subject" was meant to show that he could handle an unknown gracefully. Simmons, as we'll later see, is very good at tact and diplomacy. But I certainly didn't want to make it look like he was hoping for his valet's death.

Also, I didn't mean to insinuate that Simmons had a meeting in the brothel. He was handling his diplomatic meeting during the day. He was out whoring at night, on his own time. I'll try to rework it, so that the insinuation isn't made.

Actually, Simmons reasons for being there are more important than the Sebastian's demise. This scene is meant to set the stage whereby Simmons is found kneeling over the corpse of his valet, on the steps of a brothel. The blackmail is more the story than the actual death.

I'm really glad that everyone likes Sebastian so much. Though a minor (and ultimately tragic) character, I'm glad to see that he is fleshed out enough to have people interested enough in his demise.

And thank you for commenting on the slang. It's a difficult language for me, because I'm trying to do a futuristic Victorian serf speech, without it turning cockney, or Clockwork Orange.

Thanks again, Doc, for your help.

The "smile kindly and change the subject" part kind of bothers me. Almost gives me the feeling that he is glad his valet is dead. I'd be tempted to say "he would deftly change the subject". But perhaps I'm missing the feeling you're trying to evoke.

Was it important to Lord Simmons to visit *a* brothel, or does this particular brothel have significance to him? And is the cover political, or simply legitimate? He had a meeting, it is not his fault that the person he was meeting with wanted to have it in a facility known for assignations of less repute...

It does seem to dwell a bit on Lord Simmons motivations when the goal of the scene seems to be getting to the tale of the valet's demise.

For the most part it does work for me, however. I like the impression you give of Sebastian's dignity, and how he didn't want to be seen in such a low place. The use of slang actually is one of those things that draws me in and makes me want to read more about the culture that formed the slang.

Thanks for the guidance. This story is set in a Neo-Victorian Cyberpunk world, so the language is descended a bit from Clockwork Orange. At the same time, a lot of it is royal court intrigue, so the story may not appeal in places.

I'm glad you liked Sebastian, because I want this to be more than a single catalyst that sets schemes in motion. The story isn't as full of violence as that first scene, but I'm it will still have adventure and intrigue.

Really glad to hear that Skybo & crew were understandable. That worried me a lot.

I don't care for the tone of the first part with the Lord, but I'm not a fan of that -style-, so that's all me. If I hadn't enjoyed Tumbler, I'd bail after the second paragraph. That said, I did enjoy Tumbler, so I'd stick around. And good thing I did because I enjoyed the entire scene with Sebastian, to the point where I didn't want him dead. I want more story with him.

As for the language, it is a bit disconcerting. I'm left with the feeling that this is set in Shadowrun or some other cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic setting. I was able to understand what SkyBo meant without difficulty.

This is the kind of ending that would provoke a reader to go back and read the whole series again just to look for some sort of foreshadowing. "He had to hint at this somewhere." I mean really space whales... He has to have mentioned it somewhere. I don't remember anything about deep space angels, or giant worms that lived off rock, or baby creatures that would suckle the mysterious external power port on a ship with a smooth hull. I just can't be real... This can't be happening. There has to be more. Let me see here. Well there is that reference int he beginning, about "you can call me Ishmael." but nothing there about giant space beings. Odin's out post, no. Nothing in the star charts, nothing in the Bad Penny's living room... Oh I know, what about in South Cost... no no, I am thinking of Dune and the lightening creature. What about, in the pirate tales from Billy, but no he was just talking about human pirates. Did Libby, or Woody say anything about giant space whales? For that matter I don't think Woody or Buzz Lightyear ever talked about giant space creatures of any kind. Well that was that joke about Buzz Aldrin on the sea of tranquility and the moon creature, but I think Eddy made that one up. It just can't be happening. How could it end like this. I mean won't the hot tub slosh if the ship is being eaten by a space whale. What will happen the coffee urns, whose going to show new recruits how to keep 'em clean. Where is Alice? Didn't the Lois have some sort of cutting torches on it. I bet Mal could get him out of this mess, if only the Serenity was not clear across the verse by now. It is just too much to take. Say it ain't so Nathan!

Nothing in the star charts, nothing in the Bad Penny’s living room… Oh I know, what about in South Cost… no no, I am thinking of Dune and the lightening creature. What about, in the pirate tales from Billy, but no he was just talking about human pirates. Did Libby, or Woody say anything about giant space whales? For that matter I don’t think Woody or Buzz Lightyear ever talked about giant space creatures of any kind. Well that was that joke about Buzz Aldrin on the sea of tranquility and the moon creature, but I think Eddy made that one up. It just can’t be happening. How could it end like this. I mean won’t the hot tub slosh if the ship is being eaten by a space whale. What will happen the coffee urns, whose going to show new recruits how to keep ‘em clean. Where is Alice? Didn’t the Lois have some sort of cutting torches on it. I bet Mal could get him out of this mess, if only the Serenity was not clear across the verse by now. It is just too much to take. Say it ain’t so Nathan!

When "Fatties" are outlawed, only outlaws will have "fatties"

It's sad to see that they base their ratings on image click thru's. Of course you never see the other services commercials with the less attractive matches that they made. Don't everyone deserve to be happy?

Brand,
Thank you for saying this. I can't tell you what something like that means to me. I am the father of 8 and the only one who brings home a paycheck (I know better than to say my wife does not work she does and harder than I do.) I work two jobs but money is still tight. There are some many books that I want to buy to support the people who I find interesting and their work worth supporting. It is just not always in my budget. I rank feeding my kids and making sure they have cloths and a safe car to ride in above support authors who work I enjoy. It is just a reality of life. What I can do instead is tell people I know about the works I enjoy I and I do. I hope that it helps Thanks

I'm in your camp on this one, Mr. Admin but it's yet to make me hit the reading brakes the way that missing words do. That, in a supposed finished product, really pisses me off. Sorry, this isn't the rant you were looking for. (yes, I ended that with a preposition. Couldn't be helped.)

The argument could be made that an event is described by it's own beginning and ending (in this case, the sun beginning to blow up, and the sun being blown up). But "Instantaneously" doesn't refer to a type of measurable time. It refers to zero time. So, if it took any time at all (whether perceived or not) then it wasn't instantaneous.

And yeah, I know I'm just nitpicking, but it bugs me when people use the term for hyperbole.

While I love a good rant, doesn't instantaneous refer to the duration of an event and not, necessarily, the time elapsed between two events? Therefore, wouldn't "the sun blew up instantaneously" mean that the sun's explosion occurred over a period of imperceptible time?
